The Diaper Dilemma: Cloth or Disposable?

November 24th, 2008

It’s a question that befuddles many new parents: cloth or disposable diapers? There are no easy answers, especially for those trying to be as environmentally conscious as possible. We’ve heard for years about the precious space that disposable diapers take up in our landfills, but going the cloth diaper route isn’t necessarily the greener alternative — especially with the new breed of compostable disposables hitting the shelves. The knock on using cloth diapers is the amount of water and energy used to clean them, which ends up being not at all insignificant if you’re trying to “calculate your baby’s carbon butt-print”, as The Diaper Dilemma suggests in the latest issue of Pregnancy magazine.

If you’ve got a baby at home or on the way and have been wondering how to approach the diaper question, you’ll find this article filled with useful information. It won’t tell you which method to use, as you have to weigh that decision based on what will work best in your own life, but you will come away much more educated about the issues involved. There’s even a mention and link to a method of toilet-training that does away with diapers altogether! Click on the image above to read The Diaper Dilemma for free on Coverleaf.

Looking for the perfect holiday gift for the homemaker in your life, but don’t want to break the bank? Then you won’t want to miss the It’s Better to Give Holiday Gift Guide in this month’s issue of Better Homes and Gardens. With unique and fun suggestions in the under $15 and under $30 categories, you’re sure to be able to find something nice that is also affordable.

I especially like the monogrammed little glass trays from Fringe and the colorful plastic salad servers from French Bull.

We Get Mail

November 20th, 2008

Wow, we’ve been getting some great feedback from Coverleaf users recently! It’s really satisfying to see our vision resonating with users like this and I wanted to share some of the happy comments.

This is an amazing idea. I spend so much time clipping and organizing my magazines each month. This will save me time organizing so I can start crafting!!

Thanks so much.

I just wanted to say thanks a million, this is a really great tool.

My husband is also excited that I found this service.  As an avid “page tearer” I have quite the collection of pages saved for future reference papers and they are always floating around the house.  With your site, I can save those pages electronically, less clutter for him. :-)

I LOVE this service!  I first heard about it through my “Family Fun”
subscription.  Here are a few other titles I’d love to see added….

Southern Living
Creating Keepsakes
Simple Scrapbooks

I love that Coverleaf allows me the flexibility to access the articles for
projects or ideas that I might like to make for myself or with my
children without having to spend tons of time or frustration trying to
locate them.  I also love that I can keep all those ideas handy on my
computer, cut down on the clutter in my home and pass on the paper
copy of the magazine to a friend as part of my recycling (or rather
“reusing”) nature.

Now, to only figure out what to do with all the old years of ideas I have
already torn out of my magazines.

Thanks so much!

Your service is a must for any busy Mom!  I wish I would have known about Coverleaf sooner –  it would have saved me hours of scanning articles and pictures from my favorite subscriptions!  I hope your list of available magazines continues to grow!

I LOVE this idea and am using it.  It is awesome, however I think it would be very useful if one could “clip” if they don’t have a subscription, but bought the issue off a news stand.  I buy some of these just once in a while and I would like that option for those as well.

Great site!

[Ed Note: You can currently clip from magazines that you are not a subscriber to by opening them up in the free preview mode.]

I just read my first online Pregnancy mag, and I loved it. It is such a pleasure and it is so well made, the features are great. Thank you.

Getting Started with Coverleaf

November 17th, 2008

Are you an existing print subscriber to a magazine in the Coverleaf service? If so, you’re in luck as you can now freely and easily get access to digital editions of your favorite magazines. Here’s how.

First, find a magazine that you currently subscribe to on the Coverleaf site. You can do this by searching through our various topic areas or by looking through the alphabetized list of all the magazines on Coverleaf.

Once you’ve found your magazine, simply click on the “Current Print Subscriber” button to the right of the magazine cover and then enter in a few bits of basic information so that your print subscription status can be verified. Then you’ll quickly receive an email that gives you full access to all of the Coverleaf digital editions of that magazine, including the ability to clip, share, and save specific pages and articles.

Not a current print subscriber? No problem. You can still freely preview any of the Coverleaf digital editions and purchase single-copy digital editions and digital-only subscriptions to a growing number of magazines. Take a look around, we think you’ll be impressed!

We’re really proud to hear that min magazine has chosen our digital edition of Sporting News Today as its Online Launch of the Year for 2008. We couldn’t agree more. Safe Holiday Cooking

November 6th, 2008

Food poisoning and food-related illnesses can be horribly painful and uncomfortable and I know I don’t want to be responsible for passing on any nasty bugs to my guests this holiday season. Luckily, the latest issue of Ladies Home Journal has a feature on Safe Holiday Cooking that is a good safety resource for any cook.

Some of the tips included in Safe Holiday Cooking are pretty obvious, common-sense advice like washing your hands thoroughly before working with food and using a food thermometer to make sure any meat dish is properly cooked. But there’s also some suggestions that I wasn’t aware of, like stuffing inside of a turkey often doesn’t reach a safe temperature and it’s better to cook that in a separate baking dish, or that bacteria can grow in a frozen bird being thawed at room temperature.

Bake It to Fake It

November 6th, 2008

I’ve been trying to cut down on the amount of frying I do at home, and this article from the latest issue of Heart Healthy Living looks like it can help. Bake It or Fake It offers advice and practical tips on how to bake crunchy foods that taste great and rival their fried counterparts.

For instance, three important tricks to making great baked foods are to use strongly textured coatings like nuts and extra crisp cereals, adding flavors to the coating, and bake it hot and fast to seal in the flavor and make the outside nice and crispy. Check out sumptuous recipes for dishes like Parmesan-Crunch Baked Chicken and Cornflake and Sesame-Crusted Shrimp by clicking on the image below.

High Five for Fitness

November 4th, 2008

With our society’s junk-food obsession it’s especially important to teach healthy living and eating habits to our children. The latest issue of Weekly Reader Family has a nice feature that can help you communicate about healthy habits to your little ones. One of the things I really like about Weekly Reader Family is how it presents topics with a variety of kid-friendly examples like jokes, poems, stories, and games.

High Five for Fitness covers such important issues as washing well, eating enough fruits and vegetables, and getting enough exercise. It’s never too early to start teaching your children healthy habits, and this article makes it easy. Just click on the image below for a free preview of High Five for Fitness on Coverleaf.com.
