For example, did you know that Americans will eat 150 million hot dogs this Memorial Day weekend? Or that 49% of grillers think it’s acceptable to bring their own sauce to a BBQ? The latest issue of SchoolArts has some great ideas for educational craft projects to do with kids. I especially liked the Early Childhood Studio Lesson called Going Buggy about creating bugs out of nails and clay. It’s such a simple task but can result in colorful and playful bugs, and can help to teach your young ones about visualizing symmetry and the basic body parts of insects.
SchoolArts is packed full of educational resources and is one of the publications that is available completely for free on Coverleaf. Check it out!

This month’s issue of Ladies’ Home Journal has a timely and important article on how to Save Yourself from Skin Cancer. Where I live the sun has just started making itself felt in a big way, and we’ve pulled out the sunscreen for daily application for us and the kids.
This article emphasizes the seriousness of the growing skin cancer problem — one million new skin cancer cases will be diagnosed next year in the U.S.! With 90 percent of those being sun-related, it’s no surprise that most experts are advising daily and heavy use of sunscreen products. And while many doctors will tell you to use sunscreen year-round, it’s not your imagination that they’re needed more in the summer time. Studies show that UVA and UVB rays can be up to three times stronger in the summer than in winter months. So it’s a good idea to get in the habit of applying a sunscreen daily now, before the summer months bring the strongest rays.

Adrienne is finding some great articles in Coverleaf publications, like this one from Better Homes and Gardens on flowers and children. Many kids love flowers and working in the garden, so if Spring is springing up where you live, planting flowers with the family could be a great way to spend the afternoon.
Flower Children identifies a bunch of kid-friendly plants and flowers to spruce up your yard, and shows which ones will be quick sprouters, crowd pleasers, or attract birds and butterflies. Along with simple planting instructions, all you’ll need besides this article to get going are some seeds or sprouts.
